| Ex-Jeff official avoids charges
Former Jefferson Parish Councilman Donald Jones, booked last year with aggravated battery in an incident involving his evicting a man from a Westwego apartment complex, will not be prosecuted. The Jefferson Parish district attorney refused to accept the charge on Nov. 13, First Assistant Steve Wimberly's office said Wednesday. "I'm glad that justice prevailed and that the DA's office found that there was no malice on my part," Jones said Wednesday. "I was trying to be a good Samaritan." Jones said he was helping a friend carry out the eviction when he was booked Oct. 1 with the charge after hitting a tenant with a baseball bat at the Beechgrove Apartments in the Westwego area. He was arrested and released the same day from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.
Scientists abuzz over paper battery
US researchers say they have invented a super lightweight, flexible, biodegradable battery in the form of a piece of paper in a development that is sure to create a buzz among makers of consumer electronics. By harnessing the power of nanotechnology among other things, the researchers figured out how to shrink, reinvent and otherwise repackage the components of a regular lithium-ion battery in a sheet of cellulose paper. An early prototype of the device, just big enough to be held between thumb and forefinger, kicks out 2.5 volts, enough juice to power a small fan, or illuminate a light, and its inventors say the battery can be easily scaled up to provide enough power to run any number of electronic gadgets. "You can stack one sheet on top of another to boost the power output,'' said Robert Linhardt, a biology and chemistry professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and a member of the project's team.

Olympics to use 50 Li-ion battery powered buses
About 50 buses powered by Li-ion battery will be put into ervice for the Beijing Olympics next year, running a total distance of 10.4 kilometers for athletes and officials, according to a Beijing official. The buses will be used in three loop lines in the Olympic village, the northern area of arena and the press village, according to Zheng Jichun, deputy director of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission. On request of the organizing committee of the Beijing Olympics which was committed to a green Olympics, vehicles using electric power are needed during the games. All the 50 buses are solely powered by a kind of Li-ion battery which is different from various of existing hybrid electric vehicles, according to Sun Fengchun, an electric car expert with Beijing Institute of Technology.

There's a children's book generations old called "Pat The Bunny." It's a tactile wonder between the hard covers. Just like the 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit. This is a fine car to drive. It has the spirit and quality of the higher-performance 2007 GTI we recently drove, but costs substantially less and gets slightly better mileage. Batteries don't power this bunny.
The Rabbit is most certainly a Golf—what they call bunnies in Europe. And that's a good thing … Teutonic and all that goes with something designed and screwed together in Wolfsburg, Germany. It drives like it's from Germany, too. The ride is taut but never jarring. The front struts and independent rear suspension absorbs big bumps with nary a crash or bang. Ride motions are well controlled with little roll in corners.
