EGO waterproof sound case is best out of the water

Atlantic's EGO Waterproof Sound Case for iPod double-dog-dares you to toss your beloved music player into the nearest swimming pool.

Yikes. Would you place your iPod in the protective custody of this translucent polycarbonate shell, knowing one cannonball by an overweight American could wipe out a year's worth of tunes while destroying the player?

Atlantic (atlantic-inc.com) calls its dual-speaker case waterproof but cautions against submersion, adding a curious asterisk to the centuries-old definition of ''waterproof.'' So, yes, Elvis (and your iPod) might get all shook up if the EGO falls below the surface.

Toyota Denies Delays In Future Hybrid Launches

Toyota says it's "bemused" by the Wall Street Journal's recent story that the timing for its next generation of the Prius has been pushed back. Rebutting the story, Toyota issued the following statement:"We've been very interested to note stories in The Wall Street Journal over the past couple of days purporting that the introduction of a next-generation Prius has been delayed because of the slow pace of development of lithium-ion batteries. The Journal also claims that those same concerns have postponed the introduction of the use of our Hybrid Synergy Drive, using those batteries, in other Toyota vehicle lines such as the Sequoia and the Tundra.Of course Toyota maintains detailed schedules for future vehicle development, production and launch--schedules that are under constant refinement as market conditions and consumer needs evolve.

Nokia warns of faulty mobile batteries

Nokia has warned that up to 46 million batteries used in some of the company's handsets could be faulty and pose a risk of overheating.

The advisory applies to batteries manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial between December 2005 and November 2006, the world's largest mobile phone maker said.

Mobile phones, emails in flight

PASSENGERS on Qantas flights may be allowed to use mobile phones, send laptop computer emails or log on to the internet by the end of the year.

For the past five months, a single Qantas 767 on the run between Sydney and Perth and Darwin and Cairns has been equipped with a small base station that allows transmissions to be made without interference to aircraft systems.

Select passengers yesterday on a flight to Sydney were allowed to switch their mobile phones and lap-tops on mid-flight to be part of a trial and send test emails and SMS messages.

Voice calls were not allowed.

Initially, there were problems with service over the eastern part of Western Australia and the Great Australian Bight, before some mobiles received a message stating: "Welcome to AeroMobile, as a courtesy to fellow customers, please switch your phone to silent."

Qantas said yesterday the low-key trial began in April and anecdotally had been a success, paving the way for more domestic aircraft to be fitted with the Telstra-backed Picocell satellite-linked base station.

Researchers develop bendable battery

It's a battery that looks like a piece of paper and can be bent or twisted, trimmed with scissors or molded into any shape needed. While the battery is only a prototype a few inches square right now, the researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute who developed it have high hopes for it in electronics and other fields that need smaller, lighter power sources.

"We would like to scale this up to the point where you can imagine printing batteries like a newspaper. That would be the ultimate," Robert Linhardt a professor at the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at RPI said in a telephone interview.

The development is reported in this week's online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Unlike other batteries, Linhardt explained, it is an integrated device, not a combination of pieces.

Media PC Cards enable playback of HD video on PC.

By lowering CPU utilization and integrating with Microsoft Windows Vista(TM) and Windows XP environments, Media PC Cards enable mainstream PCs with integrated graphics to play back high definition content from Blu-ray Disc(TM) or HD DVD, as well as from HD downloaded or broadcast content. Three add-in card formats include BCM970012NB for PCI Express mini-cards, BCM970012PQ for PCI Express desktops, and BCM970012IC for ExpressCard 34.
