Toshiba Recalls More Laptop Batteries
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Friday that Toshiba is recalling 1,400 lithium-ion batteries sold in three notebook PC models -- the Satellite A100, Satellite A105, and Tecra A7. The new recall is actually part of a larger recall issued July 17, in which Toshiba recalled 5,100 Sony-manufactured batteries for 17 other models, including laptlps in the Satellite, Tecra, Portege, and Qosimo lines. Last month, Toshiba explained the batteries were being recalled because, "certain incidents" occurred where battery packs installed in Toshiba portable computers caught fire. Sony, the supplier of the batteries, concluded that certain battery cells manufactured in a specific lot could potentially lead to a safety issue. Announcement Delayed While Sony originally stated that the recall was limited to the battery packs announced on July 17, Toshiba added three models the next day.

Fix: Be sure to cushion well-trafficked areas. Position thick, non-skid rugs or rubber mats in front of the sink, stove, washer and dryer. When standing in one place for a while, rest your foot on a low stool or shelf under the sink. Switch legs every five minutes.

AMBIENT DEVICES made a splash a few years ago when it released an odd glowing glass orb that changed color depending on the direction of the stock market or the temperature outside. The orb provided just a single point of data, an approach that was the opposite of a computer's rich, confusing way of presenting information. A refreshing idea, but not one that's become mainstream, especially not with its $150 price tag. Now, the Cambridge, Mass.-based company is making some rather more practical gadgets that present the same kind of information in a less cryptic form: panels that spell out the weather forecast, or the day's stock movement, on plain, easy-to-read LCD screens. Unfortunately, they're still expensive, making these more of the Sharper-Image-gee-whiz type of gadgets than everyday items.
